When was the last time you had a mountaintop experience? Living in Colorado, I am blessed with the opportunity to hike and/or drive through a variety of mountains, which we affectionately call 14ers. A 14er is simply a mountain whose peak exceeds 14,000 feet. Hiking these mountains comes with its fair share of obstacles but always presents a unique mountaintop experience.

Since forgiveness isn’t usually easy, it’s worth pausing to ask why forgiveness is important. To help us think through the importance of forgiveness, here is what happens when we don’t forgive and when we do.
If I don’t cultivate the rhythm of forgiveness . . .
The Bible starts with God creating a beautiful world and saying that it’s very good. For a book that starts out happy, it gets dark quickly. By chapter three, the humans have decided to rebel against God and choose for themselves what’s right and wrong. By chapter four, a young man named Cain gets jealous of his brother, Abel, because God prefers Abel’s sacrifice—and so he takes his brother out in a field and murders him. We’re not even to the end of chapter four before a man named Lamech is boasting to his wives of killing two men for injuring him.

It is important to note that in Scripture there is a regularity by which Christians came together to be an assembly or gathering. The book of Acts tells us that Christians were devoted to these gatherings:
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common.” (Acts 2:42-44, NIV)
Again, Scripture also tells us that they would meet publicly and from house to house.
“You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.” (Acts 20:20, NIV)

Before I dive in, a mundane confession of my own uselessness. I think it is good for the soul to regularly be in situations where you are reminded of your own inadequacy and the adequacy of others. I’m a college administrator and professor. I have a terminal degree. This makes me useful for certain tasks and absolutely useless in others.
I’m always reminded of this when I gather with friends who are discussing repairs they’ve done to their vehicles or renovations they’ve done to their homes. “You did that?! Like, by yourself?! How many YouTube videos did you have to watch?!” It’s easy to be insecure about this, but it’s healthier to recognize that not everyone is good at everything and we need each other.

The Gospel is best understood when one has some comprehension of the whole Bible in order to get the full meaning of what is going on. That statement, attributed to the most influential management guru of our time, Peter Drucker, describes a reality that church leaders must face in the pursuit of creating disciple making churches.
A disciple making church culture is what your church actually does in disciple making; strategy is your plans on paper. Unfortunately, while we have good intentions to make disciples, our strategy and church culture do not always line up.

A definition of creativity came to me as I was reflecting on puns. I used to see puns as subpar humor, unless you’re aiming for a cringe (extra dad humor points). But I was reading James Geary’s Wit’s End: What Wit Is, How It Works, and Why We Need It, and he has a chapter on puns. The chapter helped me appreciate what goes into making a pun: you’re bringing together two separate ideas and holding them in balance to create humor.

What is the Lord’s Supper? On a Thursday night, Jesus was celebrating a Passover meal with his disciples when he shocked them by explaining how the wine and unleavened bread of Passover were actually pointing to his own sacrificial death, which would take place the next day. Jesus told them to continue remembering him through the bread and wine.

“Take things with a grain of salt” was often said to me as a young kid growing up in a rural farming community in north central Missouri. This phrase points to our tendency to shade the truth and our need to guard ourselves from getting hurt from misplaced trust. Maybe you are like me and have a friend who’s inclined to make empty promises, so you have learned to take his words with a grain of salt. Or perhaps you are lucky and have never met someone with such a disposition. Often, however, the longer we know people quick to promise but rare to deliver, the more we tend not to believe something until it happens in front of our eyes.

Some things seem absolutely crazy—at first.
Harvey is a play written by Mary Chase (also a movie starring Jimmy Stewart) about Elwood P. Dowd, a friendly man who has a strange problem: He really thinks he can see a six foot, three-and-a-half inch-tall rabbit named Harvey. To his family’s embarrassment, the friendly Elwood will introduce Harvey to everybody he meets. Eventually, his high society sister has him committed to a hospital where he will be given an injection to make him normal. But behind the scenes, someone intervenes and keeps this from happening. Guess who it is? The one who intervenes is actually Harvey the rabbit. As it turns out, the invisible rabbit is very real and Elwood isn’t crazy at all. He’s the sane one.
In Matthew 6, Jesus invites his disciples to three actions that seem fairly crazy—at first.
