Orthodox, biblical, historic Christianity does not stop at the death of Jesus. It goes straight from Jesus’ death to his resurrection—which is the flip side of the same redemptive coin. In the death of Jesus, we get our sins forgiven, and in the resurrection of Jesus, we get a new life.
Progressives often struggle with the resurrection as well as with the cross, but for different reasons. Typically, progressives push back against the atoning death of Jesus because they’re skeptical about the sinfulness of humanity, the justice of God, or the divinity of Christ. But the pushback from progressives against the resurrection has to do with their scientific metanarrative about the universe.

A worldview is the set of basic beliefs about reality by which an individual understands life. What one believes about God determines every other aspect of his or her worldview (e.g., truth, ethics, or the meaning of life). Christianity is in one respect a worldview; we study the Bible to learn and live the biblical worldview.

Do animals have souls? Let’s get imaginative. If you hear someone answer, “Of course animals don’t have souls,” what kind of person would give that answer? Well for one, that’s the answer most atheists would give since they believe no one has a soul. But the answer could just as easily be coming from a Christian. Why? In Christianity, the soul is what separates from the body at death and continues living in the afterlife (until re-embodied at the final resurrection). Since Jesus died to save humans not animals, why would animals need souls?
So, with many Christians and atheists agreeing that animals do not have souls, why read further? Might be a good time to stop reading. And maybe go hang out with your pet, considering the months you have left with it.
But what if getting to a more accurate answer takes a little more effort?

On April 8, 2024, I was one of more than 31 million people who observed a total solar eclipse as the moon cast its shadow on the earth, darkening a 100-mile-wide path across the continent, moving at the speed of 1,600 miles per hour. Most people would consider themselves fortunate to see one such event in their lifetime, and I’ve been blessed to have seen two in the last seven years. Only eight solar eclipses are predicted to affect the US throughout the entire 21st century, with the next major, coast-to-coast eclipse occurring on August 12, 2045.

Recently, on March 27, 2024, over 250 students from the University of Alabama were baptized in a downtown fountain following a worship event hosted by UniteUS. To be honest, I had mixed emotions when I lay in bed and began to hear my phone blow up thanks to our campus ministry GroupMe. Four of those students who were going to be baptized were in our ministry. Were they making a rash decision? Would this stick? For those who had been thinking about baptism for months, I ashamedly admit that I wondered why they couldn’t have decided at 1:00 p.m. instead of 11:00 p.m.

“You scrutinize my path and my lying down,And are acquainted with all my ways.Even before there is a word on my tongue,Behold, Lord, You know it all.” (Psalm 139:3-4, NASB)
I sat in a grungy Exxon Gas station repair shop estimating the dollars remaining in my bank account. I’d come in for a brake job, but it turned out I needed rotors, too, with the old pair having rusted in place. This was no surprise. I’d paid five hundred dollars for the 1995 Nissan 200sx six years before, and my mechanic at the time told me the car would see me through college. I’d graduated two years before, and still the car kept creaking along, despite the flaking paint and creeping corrosion. This repair would nearly deplete my bank account.

How did we get our Old Testament? Who decided which books made the cut (and became “canon”)? Why are there differences between the list of books in Catholic and Protestant Bibles?
Before we get into these questions, however, it is important to differentiate a couple terms: “Scripture” and “Canon.” “Scripture” can refer to any writing considered by a community to be inspired, authoritative, and normative for that community. “Canon,” a term that originally meant “measuring stick” refers to a recognized collection of inspired writings.

Imagine you are enjoying an afternoon picnic in a high mountain meadow. Lush grasses stretch out from under your feet. Wildflowers add brilliant splashes of color to the scene. The distant mountain peaks still hold some snow. Most of last winter’s snowfall is still working its way out of the mountain springs and lakes into rivers flowing down to water the valleys.
While strolling through that meadow pondering such things, imagine looking down and there, in the midst of a clump of green grass, is a wristwatch. It has a numbered, twelve-hour face with windows revealing the inner mechanisms of the watch. The first thought you would likely have in such a situation is, “Someone has lost their watch in this meadow.” Another thought also would probably come to mind, “Someone very carefully and skillfully made this timepiece.”

When was the New Testament written? One way to answer this is to list the New Testament books and give their approximate date of composition. If you’re looking more for a book-by-book summary of the books and their dates, I totally recommend an excellent article by John Whittaker called “How Many New Testament Books and What Do They Teach?” This article takes a step back and asks more of a big-picture question about the dating of the New Testament. Amid skeptical claims that the New Testament includes a lot of legendary stories, which way does the evidence point us? To a later, legendary New Testament OR to a New Testament written within the lifetimes of people experiencing the events themselves? Discerning out which way the evidence points is the purpose of this article.
Before we get to the when behind the New Testament, let’s pause and ask a couple preliminary questions:
First, what exactly is the New Testament?
Second, why does it matter when the New Testament was written?

This is my third and final article on engaging the skeptic in our preaching. Let’s take a second to review:
First, why do we need to engage the skeptic in our preaching? It’s because skepticism about Christianity is rising both inside and outside the church. That was Part 1.
Second, what works and doesn’t work in engaging the skeptic in our preaching? It doesn’t work to make church a place where we keep everybody happy or a place where we make everybody believe. What might work is when we show the skeptic how tough issues that seem inexplicable on their own fit well when you look at the bigger picture of the gospel story. That was Part 2.
